Art 7/8
The ACS middle school art department focus is to discover and refine talents and skills given to us by our Creator as a way of worship and expressing God’s greatness. Middle school students will be challenged to refine their talents and skills preparing them for more advanced techniques at the high school level. Students will explore sculpture, drawing, painting and clay in this semester course. Works will encourage creativity and refine their knowledge of in the fundamentals of art.
Band 6
Building on the fundamentals learned in 5th grade band, students will continue to develop their music reading skills, tonal quality and technical facility while increasing their range, musical vocabulary and performance abilities. Students will hone their sight-reading skills and learn all twelve major scales. Emphasis in this class is placed on tone quality, intonation and ensemble performance. At home practice is expected on a daily basis. The band performs in annual concerts and chapels as determined by the director. These dates are given to each student at the beginning of the school year. All performances are mandatory and a major portion of the student’s grade. Instruments must be provided by the student along with Essential Elements 2000, Book 2. Concert clothes are provided by the students. Reeds, valve oil, slide oil, cork grease and drum sticks must be purchased by the student as outlined in the course syllabus. Pre-requisite: One year experience in fifth grade band or director’s approval.
Band 7/8
The Junior High Band studies a variety of music literature. Students continue to develop good tone, intonation, articulation and style. Work focuses on sight-reading skills, review of the twelve major scales and learning of six minor scales. At home practice is expected on a daily basis. The band performs in annual concerts, festivals and for sporting events. These dates are given to each student at the beginning of the school year. All performances are mandatory and a major portion of the student’s grade. Instruments must be provided by the student except when school instruments are rented. Concert attire is provided by the student. Reeds, valve oil, slide oil, cork grease, drum sticks, and mutes must be purchased by the student as outlined in the course syllabus. Pre-requisite: One year in band or director’s approval.
Choir 6
Choir is designed to teach basic music skills, including note reading, sight singing, and ear training. It will familiarize the student with a variety of musical styles and literature. Choir will provide a broad experiential base which the student may draw from as he/she continues to enjoy music throughout their middle school years. It is the goal of the choir experience to enable each student to participate in ensemble singing with satisfaction and to encourage a feeling of self-worth in the student. Choir activities include school concerts, community performances, chapels, assemblies, field trips and fund raising projects. Our Spring Concert is the final performance of the school year. All concerts and performances are mandatory and a major portion of the student’s grade. Open to grade 6.

Computer 7/8
Computer on the 7th and 8th grade level is a semester course, and focuses mainly on the skill of keyboarding. The students work through the Mavis Beacon keyboarding program to instill correct hand positioning, key strokes, and learning correct letter placements. All students must take 1 semester sometime during their 7th and 8th grade years.
Family Science 7/8
This semester-long exploratory course offers students the opportunity to develop basic skills in the areas of hand sewing, manners and cooking. Students will learn basic hand sewing techniques and proper manners for a variety of social interactions. Efficient kitchen procedures and proper use of kitchen equipment will be covered, while students build skills that will last a lifetime. A variety of simple dishes will be prepared, and kitchen safety is emphasized, as well as timely and thorough cleanup
Spanish 1 7/8
This semester-long exploratory course focuses on the basics of the Spanish language. Students will be exposed to geography, basic conversation skills, and will learn about Spanish as it is used in a variety of cultures throughout the world. By semester's end, students will be able to carry on a basic conversation, be able to exchange pleasantries, as well as know numbers, letters, shapes, colors, days of the week, months of the year, and a myriad of other vocabulary, and be able to say it all with proper pronunciation! The class culminates with a fiesta! All students are encouraged take this course sometime during their 7th and 8th grade years.
Spanish 2 7/8
This semester-long exploratory course focuses on expanding vocabulary that was built in Spanish 1. Students will reinforce the vocabulary and conversation skills learned in Spanish 1 and will begin to build a grammatical foundation that will be applied throughout the course of their Spanish studies. Vocabulary covered includes family, household, classroom & school, church, and foods. By semester's end, students will be able to use vocabulary in new situations, as well as be able to recognize the parts of speech, and conjuagte regular AR verbs. The class culminates with a fiesta! All students are encouraged to take this course sometime during their 7th and 8th grade years to prepare them for Spanish at the high school level.
